I chose to set her in the tradition of Toledo, a place famous for its incredible, delicate lacework. While my brush is still working to catch up to the “Toledo standard” of intricate detail, my goal is to eventually match the dignity of the Mother and Child with lace that is as fine as their grace. For now, the focus is on her face and the beautiful reality that our Mother is as diverse as the world I love to paint.

In this work, I’ve portrayed Our Lady as a young, darker-skinned Spanish maiden. I wanted to capture that warm, radiant skin tone that reflects the sun-drenched spirit of Spain. By placing Baby Jesus in her arms in this way, I’m reminding myself and whoever sees this – that we are all His adopted children. She isn’t just a distant figure; she looks like us, she belongs to us, and she is part of our specific cultures.
