In this work, I wanted to step away from the grand scale of the Crucifixion and focus entirely on Mary’s quiet, devastating agony. This is the moment after the descent: the Pieta – where she finally holds the lifeless body of her Son. I painted her eyes not looking at the viewer, but fixed downward in a daze of grief, trying to reconcile the memory of the child she held with the reality of the sacrifice she now cradles.
