Texas is home to an embarrassment of riches when it comes to flora; from the iconic Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrushes to the vibrant Crepe Myrtles. But let’s be honest: in the South, the Magnolia is the undisputed royalty. The South is famous for its thick accents and even thicker culture, but nothing says “home” quite like the waxy, oversized bloom of a Magnolia tree.

In this piece, I set out to capture that elegance on canvas, using every brushstroke to make the petals feel almost tangible. I wanted to create something so lifelike that you’d feel tempted to reach out and touch it.
My only grievance? Despite my best efforts, I haven’t figured out how to make a paintbrush produce that intoxicating, citrusy scent. Until I master “scratch-and-sniff” oil painting, this visual tribute will have to suffice!
